Sometimes tooth decay is caught with a minor cavity. Other times, tooth decay may progress and result in considerable loss of tooth structure. When a tooth is damaged from decay, fractures can occur. The concern is that a fracture will extend beyond the gum line and the tooth will have to be extracted. When a simple filling cannot repair tooth decay, dental crowns and bridges provide a suitable solution.
Dental crowns are widely used on both children and adults. They may be called for in the following situations:
- When a tooth has decayed to the point of significant weakness.
- To restore a broken tooth
- To SPLINT a large filling
- For use with a dental implant
- For use with a dental bridge
A dental crown is a "cap" that covers a tooth to restore shape, size and strength. A crown can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth, although veneers are taking over in popularity in such cases. A crown fully covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, and is held in place with dental cement, providing a strong tooth structure adequate for daily activities.
Although crowns may be made from several different materials, gold and porcelain are the most commonly used. Patients choose porcelain fused to metal, just to keep everything looking more natural. Other options include all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns. Should you need a crown, your dentist can advise you on your best options.
Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth without the use of a denture or dental implant. This permanent solution can incorporate crowns made from porcelain, ceramic or other material typically used in crowns. Essentially, a bridge is a set of three or more crowns, depending on how many teeth are missing. A pontic, or fake tooth, sits in place where the tooth is missing, and is attached to a crown on each side. With this treatment, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth are used as anchors. Each tooth will be prepared for a crown, and the bridge is set into place.
