It is recommended by The American Dental Association (ADA) that you receive a checkup from your family dentist a minimum of two times each year. Family dentistry is very similar to general dentistry and is viewed as a preventative field of dentistry. The difference between family and general dentistry is so slight that the terms are often used interchangeably. However, some people view the family dentist as the one-stop-shop for the entire family, regardless of age. With your family dentist, from the youngest to the oldest family member can receive checkups, hygiene and restorative care.
A family dentist may not handle all restorative procedures; but you can expect to receive services such as fillings, crowns, inlays or onlays and sometimes even some cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening from your family dentist.

Fillings
Fillings repair damage to the structure of a tooth. Damage can be the result of wear and tear, trauma or tooth decay. Your family dentist will remove the problem area of the tooth or teeth and will restore tooth structure with a filling. Fillings may be comprised of several materials. In the past, the main option was amalgam, but now patients can choose to have their fillings composed of, composite resin.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are an option to replace missing teeth with artificial replacements (pontic). A dental bridge is held in place with CEMENT that is anchored to surrounding teeth.
Dentures
Dentures replace missing or damaged teeth that cannot be repaired in any other way. While dentures are still widely used, dental implants are providing a new and permanent option for patients to restore smiles with a more natural tooth structure. Dental implants can be discussed with your family dentist and compared to the option of dentures.
