Snoring & Sleep Apnea Solutions
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that affects many Americans. Common symptoms are loud snoring, extreme sleepiness and tiredness during the day, high blood pressure, and waking up at night several times, often accompanied by gasping or choking. If you (or your partner) have these sleep apnea symptoms, come see us at The Waterford Dentist right away. Sleep apnea may be causing those symptoms. It's a serious condition that has been linked to heart disease, so early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
Sleep study and comprehensive examination are used to diagnose sleep apnea. These tests can be done at home or in a sleep laboratory. Our practice offers sleep tests out of office and we work closely with the hospital for timely diagnosis.
If tests show that you have sleep apnea, Dr. Heuerman and Dr. Ratz will first recommend conservative treatment options such as CPAP and oral appliances.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a sleep apnea device that pumps a steady flow of air into the airways. The steady flow keeps the air passages open, allowing you to breathe normally while you sleep. CPAP is usually recommended for mild to severe cases. It's the first line of treatment for sleep apnea. However, noncompliance is a problem for some patients. Some find the sleep apnea mouthpiece so uncomfortable that they stop using it.
For patients that are intolerant to CPAP, we recommend custom oral appliances. These dental devices, like CPAP, can also keep the air passages open while you sleep, but in a much more comfortable way. The oral appliance actually pushes your lower jaw forward to hold the airway open, which will allow you to breathe comfortably throughout the night!
